MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG

The more time you spend with your German Shepherd, the happier they will be and the more they will learn, I can't over emphasize the importance of spending time with your puppy. If you could just take your puppy for a walk once a day for 15 minutes, you could train them to do anything and get them socialized at the same time.

There's an old saying, A dog is only as smart as his master. All you really need is common sense. A German Shepherd is the most loyal and loving companion. They will devote themselves to being with you, protecting you, loving you unconditionally till their last breath.
I only hope that you will make yourself worthy of such devotion and love.

1st- I will refer puppy as a Him.

As you are on your walk be sure to bring some treats for rewards of good behavior. At every corner stop as if you are going to cross the street, If the puppy steps into the street give a brisk eh! and coach him back so he will learn not to go into the street. Then stand directly in front of your puppy and be sure to get eye contact. It's always good to give lots of praise so be sure to reach down and pet him and say good Dog from the heart. when you have his attention take two brisk steps backward as you say come with vigor, and hold the treat in your hand between your legs at his level so the puppy can get it as it stands directly in front of you. Always use the command at the same time with vigor. The brisk steps backward will give the puppy a sense of urgency response. Do this at least three times then continue to the next corner.

At the next corner, you can bring in the sit command. To do this just repeat the come as before 3 times then hold the treat in your hand, as he reaches for it lift your hand slightly up and back as you give the sit command and he will go into the sit position. Always give rewards and praise for good behavior. You are establishing good habits that will last a lifetime. Repeat 3 times. Then walk to the next corner.

Next corner work on the heel. To do this, repeat the come, sit then go to come, (give reward) then sit. (give reward) then use a treat and make a large circle for him to follow to position him at your left side as you give the command HEEL. (give reward) and now walk with treat almost in his mouth and say heel and keep him in position with the reward. The tone of voice is very important with praise. Do this three times. then walk to the next corner.

Next corner we will work on down and stay. Just repeat come, sit, heel. three times with lots of praise and rewards for good behavior. Then bring him to the sit, and give the command Down as you reach your hand with the reward to the ground directly in front of your puppy. He will go down to get the treat, sometimes you may have to help him by placing your hand on his back and position him in the down position. once in position give a reward. Give praise with vigor, and rewards often to help keep the energy levels high. When training the down, I will always begin work on the stay. As he is in the down, just stand up say stay and use your hand as a forceful look straight in front of him and say stay. be sure to keep eye contact. if he gets up don't be upset, I always just give the Eh!! voice sound, and go back to point where he was down, position him again and say stay, use the hand in front of him as you stand up. try to hold this for just a few seconds. As you can see him grasping the stay Sometimes I like to just walk a circle around him as he stays clockwise and counterclockwise, You want to increase the time and distance as he progresses. Repeat for three days at every corner. I always like to use the word FREE when we are done with training.
These are the basics. The video above should help a bunch.

2nd- find a block with more activities like a school, just repeat as you did before, but now, you always walk him in the heel. Just use the treat in front of his nose till he gets the idea, it won't take long. just be sure to keep him in the heel position when walking. At each corner do the come, sit, down, then heel as you continue to the next corner. You will want to start crossing the street now. He should always stop and sit in the heel position at each corner. The pup should really be into listening and anxious to make you happy by now. plus, he will be getting used to the big world around him so he won't be anxious but be very comfortable in his own skin. people should be able to come pet him, with your permission. He should be somewhat used to other dogs and cats and so on, thing going on around him.

3rd- find a busy place like a Walmart or Costco, Walk with him around the parking lot. go to the front where the doors are opening and closing people coming and going. go through all the commands always working on obedience. do this for three days. By now you should be able to give the command to stay and walk 50 ft. away or more and he should be able to stay for 2 minutes. He should know all commands. treats are limited to a series of steps rather than each step. He will be looking for your praise more than the treat. He should be a very controlled dog even in a busy place like Walmart.

Now for steps 4,5 and 6 just repeat steps 1,2, and 3 without a leash.

If you are looking at purchasing a German Shepherd, you have to understand, that any German Shepherd lives to protect their property and family, It's what they do, It's their nature and job. This is why we recommend getting them socialized because a German Shepherd can be very intimidating and hard to handle. I will give you an example. If you have children and have visitors often, your German Shepherd will become more social, and learn to accept people coming and going. Say you have a large gathering thru out the day of 20 people, then 1 new guest arrives. Your German Shepherd will not miss this new arrival and will no doubt make them, and you, aware. On the other hand, say you live in the country, just you and your wife with very little traffic coming and going. Your Shepherd will most likely not let anyone step foot on your property. So you need to take them with you as often as possible to socialize them, take them for walks in busy populated areas, parking lots, storefronts, And we highly recommend puppy training classes. But ideally, you need to do this when they are puppies.

We at Beartooth Kennels begin socializing our puppies at birth. The INTRODUCTION PHASE of their development begins at day one. Getting them familiar to the human touch, sound, sight, and smell. We use many different stimulation tools to do this from cold rags, radios, to rock in cans and so on. As they progress, we like to introduce them to louder sounds like horns honking, clapping, clanging, some fireworks, distant gunfire etc. From 5 weeks to 7 weeks is the SKILLS PHASE of their development. Then comes the CRITICAL PHASE of development, 8 to 10 weeks. This critical stage is I believe the time when a dog can come into a negative situation and have such an effect that he or she may never recover from it. An example would be, say your puppy comes into contact with a dachshund and is attacked, your German Shepherd may never recover from that and will forever be dominated by a dachshund. So I strongly suggest controlling the environment around them thru this crucial period. I feel so strongly about this that sometimes we will hold a few puppies from a litter and begin a puppy obedience training program we call stage 1 [4 weeks - housebreaking, come, sit, down, and stay and whatever else we can put in the mix] before they go to their new homes. This process provides a positive and mental stimulation, day in and day out, for a confident and assured puppy, and builds a strong character for a superior bred German Shepherd dog.

Buying a puppy is a huge commitment for the life of the dog. German Shepherds can live an average of 12 years. Be absolutely sure when purchasing any puppy.

Ask questions and be knowledgeable of the breed before making your purchase.
